Hong Kong in ChatGPT’s Eyes

I have been living in Hong Kong for nearly 30 years, and I always miss Hong Kong very much ever since I left Hong Kong 10 years ago.

In ChatGPT’s Eyes, how does Hong Kong look like?

Last week I asked ChatGPT to create a few images that can represent Hong Kong. It gave me a couple of its suggestions.

  1. Victoria Harbor
  2. Hiking in Hong Kong
  3. A Chinese Temple
  4. Dim Sum
  5. Chinese Festivals

I didn’t give any specific instructions to ChatGPT and let the AI create the images at ease. Here you go with the images.

1. Victoria Harbor: The skyline of the AI generated image was pretty. However, the harbor looked extremely busy. There were lots of junks on the harbor and that was inaccurate. Junks are rare nowadays. You should thank God for spotting one on the harbor.

I asked ChatGPT to update this image by replacing all the junks with a Star Ferry.

I was pretty satisfied with the outcome.

2. Hiking in Hong Kong: I was entirely astonished by this image generated by ChatGPT. The air looked fresh. The only issue with this image is that IFC, the second tallest building in Hong Kong, was missing. Yet, the ambience was pleasant in general.

3. A Chinese Temple: Again, I believed this image was accurate. The architecture was described in great details. However, it would be better to have more people praying in the temple.

4. Dim Sum: This image had quite some rooms to improve. First of all, no one would treat the whole shrimp as dim sum.

I also spotted a lot of Shanghainese xiaolongbao (pork dumplings) on the table. In fact, xiaolongbao seldom appeared in Hong Kong dim sum restaurants.

The image also looked a bit old-school. I felt like I was in 1980.

I decided to ask ChatGPT to create another dim sum image from scratch. ChatGPT creates nice images, but the AI generated images are not always right. This time I spent quite some time asking ChatGPT to create different versions of the dim sum images.

This was the version I picked finally. The ambience was modern, and the dim sum were accurate.

5. Chinese Festivals: From my perspectives, this image about the mid-autumn festival carried too many details. Apart from this, mooncakes were far larger than expected. Meanwhile, people in the background looked ancient. Lastly, I hoped people in the image could look happier.

Again, I asked ChatGPT to create another image from scratch. I finally picked the following one after a series of trials and error.

Mid-autumn festival is all about family and togetherness. Don’t you feel very happy when you see this image?

Final Thoughts

I started to use ChatGPT last year. At first, I just used it for leisure. However, later on I used ChatGPT for a wide variety of purposes.

I am always astounded at the pace of AI development in the past year.

How will AI impact the way we, as marketing professionals, work? I would like to hear your thoughts.
