Last week, I saw the “A.I. vs K.I.” campaign from Kraft Heinz brand Lunchables Dunkables. (“K.I.” stands for “Kid’s Imaginations.”) AI and a group of kids were given the same prompt and asked to create some artwork.
Let’s see what happened.
Clearly, kids were far more imaginative than AI which couldn’t imagine anything beyond food.
I have a couple of thoughts.
First, imagination keeps the world moving. Most discoveries and inventions begin from imagination. Without imagination, we won’t have any intention to explore the beauty of the world. We can’t figure out how the red blood cells work, or what is in the outer space. Imagination helps make a better world.
Second, our education should not stop kids from imagining. Why can’t we allow kids to draw a green elephant? Perhaps there is a green elephant somewhere in a safari, and we haven’t discovered it yet? Encourage our kids to talk more about the green elephant. Perhaps they can give us some insights? We should explore every possibility.
My 4-year-old loves drawing. I know he may not be the best artist, but he may be one of the best storytellers. He can compose a full story from each of his pictures. This is what really makes me very proud.

We should only stop our kids when they violate any law, or when they do something unethical.
Third, it is about “augmenting creativity” vs. “producing creativity”. I read this article from World Economic Forum, and was reminded that AI may still be less likely to come up with anything disruptive at the moment. Note that right now AI is just a tool that is trained to provide an answer based on existing data and algorithms. Therefore, can AI provide creative answers to questions that have no solutions right now? I doubt.

Therefore, we should make it clear about the roles that AI should play in our lives. Do we allow AI to create everything in the world? Are we willing to accept whatever AI says to us? Should we, human beings, regain some control over our lives?
Human intelligence is a treasure. We should use it well.
How do you use AI in your creative work? Let me know in the comments!
